As Google has become one of the most influential companies in the world, there is a responsibility to foster a diverse workforce and equitable work culture. They asked Nadel to create a kit featuring products from Black-owned businesses, which would be gifted to C-suite employees who led diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Nadel curated a selection of top-quality products from Black makers, resulting in an experience that emphasized the company's commitment.
The Challenge
The kit needed to reflect Google's focus on diversity and celebrate their positive impact. Going outside of our typical supply chains, we needed to source a broad offering of useful, unique products from the most creative Black creators in the world. Google also had a fast two- to three-week timeline.
The Process
To create a memorable experience, we partnered with smaller scale, creative makers in places ranging from Chicago to Kenya. Each product felt like a unique keepsake and most came with an interesting story or cultural significance.
Among the products included was a Bolga fan from Ghana and a Ubuntu beaded bracelet handmade by a community of Maasai moms in the Ngong Hills of Kenya. Also included was a body balm from a Black woman-owned business in Chicago, a t-shirt from a small business in Atlanta and a pouch crafted from Cuba cloth, a traditional textile from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Finally, we rounded out the kit with coffee beans from Blk & Bold, a Harlem Candle Co. candle, a journal based on Michelle Obama's memoir, and a mindfulness card set.
The eye-catching exterior of the box was designed to look like Ankara patterns, which are traditional West African wax prints. It's often considered a formal fabric worn for special occasions.
Finally, Nadel managed the shipping and fulfillment; the kits were delivered to Google employees all over the world.
The Results
Building partnerships with small businesses across the globe resulted in a unique and memorable gift. Google was thrilled with the outcome, as it was the perfect reward for their employees' hard work in the diversity, equity, and inclusion space. We enjoyed the opportunity to showcase small POC-owned businesses who give back to their communities.
